Good Question

What is the technical definition of "demand" as used in the industry?

The rate of use at any instant or averaged over a period of time, and which is measured in kilowatts (kW) or kilovolt- amperes (kVA).

There isn't any concern about climate change. Or any mention of goal-setting for carbon reduction. Why not?

The fewer chemical compounds released, the better.  When the methodology is synchronizing buildings to function smoothly, power demand eases. Power-generation is reduced. And this reduces emissions. That said, if a customer wants a calculation demonstrating specific reductions in greenhouse gas emissions, it can be provided.

Are there any models used other than the Calendar model?

Yes, there is a sister model: looking at a year as 8,760 hours then 15-minute interval data. There is also a "goodness-of-fit" model. Observed performance is compared to expected result. Losers get kicked to the curb. Winners remain.

Why should someone choose DSM instead of just installing solar?

Choose both. On-site solar electric cuts demand for off-site power delivery so solar is DSM. (When on-site renewable energy is part of a DSM solution it is called IDSM -- Integrated Demand-side Management.)

Who are some of your customers?

We go where we are needed. For instance, retail. Stores have long hours of with a.c. units running and all the lights on. Also, administrative offices. They have common problems. Like staff losing respect for thermal controls, with areas in the building too cold and other areas too warm.

For buildings needing DSM, what is typical?

Issues with air-conditioning. There is dissatisfaction with air quality and energy expense.
