Timely Maneuver

With time in mind, we can discover a gratifying effectiveness. By looking methodically at what happens when we can set up ways for seeing patterns, finding maneuvers, getting results.

A simple example. For this customer, the solution was airflow and door hardware. A competitor of Panera Bread, the project is a quick-casual restaurant. The layout: it has a preparation kitchen, refrigerated food storage, dry goods storage bays, a serving kitchen, public bathrooms, a lobby and dining rooms. People come and go through a pair of green glass doors that are framed in silver metal. In the morning, everything was fine. The doors worked swinging smoothly, closing gently. But in the afternoon everything changed. Somehow, neither of them worked anymore and one of them failed to close by 2 inches. This meant that a gap 2 inches wide by 7 feet high yawned open. Barrier-control was lost. Both efficiency and comfort disappeared.

We discovered why. During afternoons, steadily increasing warming of outside air was influencing the frames. Temp-
eratures rising, metal expanding. So the closer hardware was upgraded. Now in the afternoons — during discovered time intervals when the silver frames gain a sneaky fractional size — the new hardware overcomes the hindrance and both doors close. Completely. So a goal has been achieved. Now, airflow from tuned hvac and ceiling grills efficiently brings comfort to customers.
